Apple M1 Replacement Chip Already In Production
According to Asia Nikkei, the next generation of Apple’s computer processor has already gone into production.
According to sources, shipments of the new chipset, tentatively called M2, could start as early as July for MacBooks, which are expected to go on sale in the second half of this year.
The new chipset is manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. using the latest semiconductor manufacturing technology known as 5+nm, or N5P.
As noted, it takes TSMC at least three months to get the new chip into production.
Apple first unveiled the M1 in late 2020 and said the company would completely phase out Intel chips within two years.
According to research firm IDC, Mac shipments jumped 29 percent to 23.1 million units in 2020 because of the move to work from home.
Apple shipped 6.69 million computers between January and March, up 111 percent from a year earlier when the pandemic disrupted electronics production worldwide.
