If you have an old Galaxy smartphone at home that you haven’t used for a long time, don’t rush to get rid of it. Thanks to a new feature in the SmartThings app, you can turn this device into a baby monitor or light sensor.

The new feature is called SmartThings Labs and uses sensors and microphones built into the smartphone. Relying on artificial intelligence, the app identifies certain “disturbing” sounds in the room (such as a baby crying, a dog barking, a cat meowing or a knock on the door). It sends a message to the user’s smartphone. Also, the user can view the recorded sounds.

There is a similar sound recognition function in iOS 14. However, the advantage of Samsung’s solution is that the second, not the main smartphone, is used to record sounds. Its owner can learn about the events in the room without being in it. True, the first time SmartThings Labs will not be available worldwide, but only in the United States, Britain and Korea.

Also, SmartThing allows you to use a second smartphone as a light sensor and control other connected devices at a distance — for example, turn on or off the TV in the living room. Since the batteries of older devices are more likely to wear out, Samsung has promised to release an update to optimize power consumption.
