Samsung Introduced a 50-megapixel Camera Sensor for Thin Smartphones

The new product, called ISOCELL JN1, has high light sensitivity and compact size, which allows you to reduce the size of the camera module. This advanced sensor is positioned as a solution for gadgets in the mid-price segment.

The pixel size of ISOCELL JN1 is 0.64 micrometers. This allowed the engineers to fit into the 1/2.76-inch optical format and eventually abandon the massive camera blocks with a protrusion in the development of mid-budget smartphones. Samsung assures that the new sensor also has 16% greater light sensitivity than its predecessor.

Using 4-in-1 pixel fusion technology, photo resolution is reduced to 12.5 megapixels. Still, the pictures are more detailed, saturated and bright even in low-light conditions.

The Samsung ISOCELL JN1 supports several proprietary technologies, including Smart ISO, Double Super PDAF and ISOCELL 2.0, and lets you shoot video in 4K resolution at up to 60 frames per second, or in Full HD @ 240 fps. Samsung notes that the sensor can be used with any type of lens.

“Samsung’s advanced pixel technology has once again pushed the boundaries with the highest precision and developed an image sensor with the industry’s smallest pixel size, but with high performance. The new ISOCELL JN1 can power the sleekest smartphones focused on ultra-high-resolution mobile photography,” said Dakheun Chang, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics’ sensor division.

Serial production of the new product has already started, and the appearance on the market of the first smartphones equipped with the branded sensor is expected shortly.
