The integration between Instagram and Facebook Messenger chats is set to be disconnected this month.
Meta is initiating the process of discontinuing the capability for “cross-app chats” between Instagram and Facebook Messenger starting this month.
In 2020, when Meta was still known as “Facebook,” the company announced the integration of its Messenger experience with Instagram to enhance the chatting experience across platforms. Users were encouraged to “update” their messaging experience to stay connected with friends on both Facebook and Instagram.
Fast forward three years, and Meta is now reversing this integration. According to a recent support page, cross-app chatting between Messenger and Instagram will cease to exist by “mid-December 2023.” The company outlines the changes users can expect with the deactivation of this feature:
- Users won’t be able to initiate new conversations or calls with Facebook accounts from Instagram.
- Existing chats with Facebook accounts will become read-only, preventing the exchange of new messages.
- Facebook accounts won’t have visibility into users’ Activity Status or message read receipts.
- Existing chats with Facebook accounts won’t be transferred to users’ inboxes on Facebook or Messenger.
